Lung Fung Bakery: A Taste of Tradition in San Francisco

Established decades ago, Lung Fung Bakery has become a staple for those seeking genuine Chinese pastries. The moment you step inside, the aroma of freshly baked goods welcomes you, and the display cases showcase an array of mouthwatering treats.

Signature Pastries That Keep Customers Coming Back

Lung Fung Bakery is renowned for its diverse selection of baked goods, each crafted with care and traditional techniques. Some of the standout items include:

  • BBQ Pork Buns (Cha Siu Bao): Fluffy, golden buns filled with savory, sweet marinated pork.

  • Egg Custard Tarts: Creamy, smooth custard encased in a flaky pastry shell.

  • Pineapple Buns (Bo Lo Bao): Sweet, crunchy topping over a soft, pillowy bun.

  • Cocktail Buns: Sweet coconut filling wrapped in a soft, slightly sweet bun.

  • Ham & Egg Buns: A delightful combination of savory ham and scrambled eggs in a soft bun.

These pastries are made fresh daily, ensuring a delightful experience with every bite.

A Local Favorite with a Loyal Following

Why Lung Fung Bakery Stands Out

This commitment to authenticity resonates with customers who appreciate the genuine taste of classic Cantonese pastries.

Reviewing just the BBQ pork buns here... I was recommended this specific bakery for the BBQ pork buns and they did not disappoint! They're super affordable too. The place was cash only. Be prepared for a bit of a wait if those in front of the line are buying by the dozen (only one person worked the front). Seemed like a decent mom and pop / hole in the wall shop.

This review only pertains to the char siu baos. I’ve searched high and low and tried over two dozen bakery’s char siu baos across the entire city of SF from Chinatown to Mission, to Ocean Avenue to the Richmond and Sunset districts, and Lung Fung is my favorite, by a long shot. What makes this my favorite BBQ Pork bun in the City? The filling is generous, the BBQ pork is chopped in .5cm pieces, no odd bits of gristle or fat, the bun is chewy, yet soft and sweet, and there are no dead spots, where you take a bite and it’s all bread and no filling. FYI - Curry beef Puff pastry is baked much later in the morning. Cash Only.

A truly wheat flour, Chinese bakery (no BS) doing one thing well — baked buns with alluringly caramel-brown crusts. A 3-man team can be seen preparing the dough in the back during morning hours. Baked BBQ Pork Buns, excellent.

The pork BBQ buns are really good here!! The egg tarts are also super delicious. I’ve been here a few times and there’s always a line (the service is not the most efficient). But, I think it’s worth the wait!

no frills chinese bakery serving all the classics. most famous for their bbq pork bun and egg tarts, i can confirm the hype! cash only. would stop by next time im in the area. bbq pork buns: best pork buns i’ve had. they came out warm and fresh, plenty of filling cooked perfectly. bun was fluffy and moist with a thin crust from the baking. must try! egg tarts: they were super flaky as others have mentioned and tasty overall but the yank sing tarts still take the cake.

10-26-21: Got a few custard tarts and BBQ pork buns to go. The custard tarts were very tasty. Lots of filling and flaky crust! The pork buns were good with a generous amount of filling. I found something a little different in the dough. Maybe some coconut flavor?!? Couldn't pinpoint the exact ingredient. Not sure if I liked the coconut.

Don't underestimate the appearance of this tiny bakery, which is such a neighborhood gem. I come here mainly for the custard tarts which is comparable, if not better than the ones found in Chinatown. I also love their giant Walnut Cookies, which are actually almond cookies, and the coconut cream buns. Keep in mind, however, that it's cash only, so come prepared.
